Chitrakote Falls: The Niagara of India

By Amar SinghPublished on February 10, 2025

The breathtaking waterfall in Bastar region is often called the Niagara of India.

Chitrakote Falls is undoubtedly one of Chhattisgarh's most spectacular natural wonders. Located on the Indravati River in the Bastar region, about 38 km from Jagdalpur, this horseshoe-shaped waterfall is the widest in India.

Why Visit Chitrakote Falls?

Standing at a height of about 30 meters, the falls create a magnificent spectacle as water cascades down in a horseshoe shape, reminiscent of the famous Niagara Falls - earning it the nickname "The Niagara of India." The sheer volume and width of water, especially during monsoon season, create an awe-inspiring view that photographs simply cannot capture.

Best Time to Visit

While Chitrakote Falls is beautiful year-round, its appearance changes dramatically with the seasons:

  • Monsoon (July-October) - The falls are at their most powerful and impressive, with reddish-brown water due to the soil
  • Winter (November-February) - The water volume decreases but becomes clearer, with a beautiful blue-green tint
  • Summer (March-June) - Water levels are lower, but this allows visitors to get closer to the falls

Nearby Accommodations

Several options are available for staying near the falls:

  • Chitrakote Eco Resort - Run by Chhattisgarh Tourism Board with excellent views
  • Dandami Luxury Resort - Premium accommodation with all amenities
  • Homestays in nearby villages - For an authentic cultural experience

Local Tips

Consider taking a boat ride below the falls for a unique perspective, and don't miss the smaller Chitradhara falls nearby. The area is also home to tribal communities with rich cultural traditions worth exploring.
